2021 Reunion, Science and Environmental Center opens and more!
January 2021 Alumni Newsletter

We look forward to welcoming you home to Nueva for our
2021 Virtual Alumni Reunion on Saturday, June 5!

As we continue to be restricted with large group gatherings, we will host this year's reunion virtually. We look forward to a day of celebration and community, and please stay tuned for more event details to be shared during the next few months.

If you have any questions or would like to support reunion planning,
please contact the Alumni Office at alumni@nuevaschool.org or (650) 350-4562.
LAUNCHING:
JOIN OUR ALUMNI GROUP

We are launching an alumni working group to support and advise the Alumni Office with community, event, and programmatic offerings. All alumni and parents of alumni who are interested in learning more about the group or have an interest in getting more involved are encouraged to inquire.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION:

TOWN HALL INTEREST

Nueva is committed to being an anti-racist institution, and we currently are examining our diversity, equity and inclusion practices and community history. In July 2020, the trustee-led Racial Equity and Accountability Task Force was formed to assist the institution in navigating this crucial work.

Science and
Environmental Center Opens
A Message from Head of School
Lee Fertig

I am thrilled to celebrate the completion of Nueva’s Science and Environmental Center on our Hillsborough campus. Coupled with the completed expanded café and kitchen, these new facilities provide additional classroom and community space that is needed now more than ever as we welcome more and more students back to campus.

Students in lower, middle, and upper school will call the Science and Environmental Center home, as we collectively strive to better understand the world around us, this glorious yet vulnerable planet we inhabit, and our important role in caring for it. Our new learning facility will promote interdisciplinary studies encompassing humanities, science, the arts, and service learning as we collaboratively address climate change and other environmental issues.

We look forward to offering tours of our new facilities when we are able, as there is no substitute for experiencing them in person.

YOUNG ALUMNI:
VIRTUAL TRIVIA LUNCHEON & INTERSESSION

More than 60 young alumni joined us to kick off 2021 at our virtual trivia luncheon and participate in intersession. The week-long series of events began on January 5, when the Classes of 2017-2020 reunited for a lighthearted trivia competition and enjoyed a virtual meal together via DoorDash gift cards.

For the first time in program history, our Upper School graduates participated in intersession. Alumni enjoyed attending more than 40 hand-selected sessions and activities over the four-day event.

“Intersession is a uniquely Nueva thing, which was why I was so open to the opportunity to join a class as an alumna,” said Isabel Chambers '20.

IN MEMORIAM:

STEPHEN LESSARD

We were sad to learn of former faculty member Stephen Lessard's passing in December. A beloved member of the Nueva community, he left a lasting impact on his former colleagues and students.

If you’d like to reach out and share your memories or learn more about how to support the family, please send cards or a query to Upper School Division Head Liza Raynal '95 at lraynal@nuevaschool.org or 131 E. 28th Ave., San Mateo, CA 94403.
